New Rice website lists over $1M in funding opportunities for faculty

Students gathered near Willy's Statue.A new Rice website called Creative Ventures compiles more than $1 million in funding opportunities available to faculty to support their creativity in teaching and research.

Provost Marie Lynn Miranda said the website is part of the university’s Research Competitiveness Initiative and was designed “to amplify the enormous creativity of Rice faculty.”

The site provides an easy and efficient way to review the many internal opportunities to apply for funding that is available annually to support new and creative works in research and scholarship.

In addition to traditional resources like the Arts Initiatives Fund, the Teaching Innovation Fund and the Faculty Initiatives Fund, this umbrella site includes three new funding opportunities:

* The Workshop and Conferences Fund, which can be used to develop conferences and workshops that enhance the reputation and quality of scholarship across the university.

* The InterDisciplinary Excellence Awards Fund, which promotes development of new research or academic partnerships that extend across multiple schools to engage faculty in new and creative scholarship. A minimum of three faculty representing at least two schools is required.

* The Doerr Leader Development Innovation Awards, which support faculty contributions to the development of students’ capacity to lead across the university through innovative teaching, curricular innovations and relevant research.

Details about eligibility requirements, review and selection criteria and the application process are included for each funding opportunity, along with the proposal deadline, which varies for each opportunity. The earliest deadline is March 1 for the Arts Initiatives Fund.

Only one award may be made to a faculty member per fiscal year (July 1-June 30).
