U.S. Senator Phil Gramm visits Rice

U.S. Sen. Phil Gramm will visit Rice University on
Wednesday, Jan. 13, at 12:20 p.m. for a briefing on the
accomplishments of the university’s George R. Brown Institute of
Biosciences and Bioengineering.

The senator will be greeted by Rice University president George
Rupp, who will introduce Gramm to Dr. Larry McIntire, chairman of
the Institute of Biosciences and Bioengineering, and to Dr. Antonios
Mikos, the T. N. Law Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering and
Bioengineering.

McIntire will give an overview of biomedical research going on
at the award-winning laboratory that opened in 1991. Mikos will
make a brief presentation on his research in synthetic tissue
scaffolding that has important implications for transplant surgery
and the regeneration of liver tissue. Sen. Gramm will discuss the
implications of federal and private funding for biomedical research.

After visiting a laboratory, Sen. Gramm will depart at 1:10 p.m.
Rice researchers will be available for interviews.
