Rice Students Volunteer on Outreach Day, Sept. 24
On Saturday, Sept. 24, the Rice Student Volunteer Program (RSVP)
kicks off its seventh annual fall Outreach Day. Each semester this
event draws hundreds of Rice University students, faculty and staff
who participate in a range of service and volunteer activities
across the Houston community.
Outreach Day ’94 has 30 different service projects and activities
scheduled. Rice volunteers will help build homes for the needy, aid
in hunger relief, assist disadvantaged and neglected youths, plant
trees around the city and work in recycling programs.
"Outreach Day is a great opportunity for Rice students to get out
and volunteer at more than 30 projects in the Houston community,"
said Tony Poothulil, a Rice senior and coordinator of this year’s
Outreach Day. "More than 600 members of the Rice community
participate on this one day, and many of those continue to volunteer
throughout the year. It’s an exciting chance to learn more about
others, learn more about ourselves and have fun at the same time."
RSVP hopes that Outreach Day will serve the community not only on
the day itself but will foster the spirit of volunteerism in
participants to continue service throughout the year by
demonstrating firsthand the many and varied opportunities and needs
around us.
"Outreach Day is a way for students to learn about the needs of the
community and to realize how they can lend their own skills and
strengths to meet those needs," said RSVP Director Seanna Kerrigan.
Activities will begin 8 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, and will continue
throughout the day. See attached page for photo opportunities.
