New Technology Links Area Schools to Rice University

Students and teachers from campuses in the
Houston Independent School District (HISD) will demonstrate a new
distance learning network from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec.
13, 1994

The demonstration class will include students interviewing state
legislators through the use of two-way interactive, full-motion
videoconferencing technology provided by Southwestern Bell Telephone
Co. The project is a collaboration between Southwestern Bell, Rice
University, HISD and the South Texas Independent School District.

The demonstration will be held simultaneously at the High School
for Health Professions, Worthing Senior High School and The Rice
School/La Escuela Rice.

Members of the Harris County legislative delegation have been
invited to attend the class. During the hour-long demonstration,
state representatives Sylvester Turner, D-Houston, and Debra
Danburg, D-Houston, will answer questions from students about how
government works.

Media covering the demonstration should be at the Project Owlink
classroom at The Rice School/La Escuela Rice, at the corner of North
Braeswood and Kirby Dr., by 12:45 p.m. on Dec. 13.

For more information about Project Owlink or the demonstration
class, please contact Michael Cinelli, director of the Rice
University News Office, at (713) 831-4794.
