Rice Officials Begin Cleanup and Repairs at RMC

Rice president Malcolm Gillis and committee
chairs of the university’s Board of Governors have already discussed
this morning’s fire at the Rice Memorial Center (RMC). Now that the
Houston Fire Department has given us access to the building, we have
brought contractors on site to begin the cleanup and reconstruction
process.

The fire was localized in one section of the building. No one
was hurt in the incident.

It is our hope that two-thirds of the RMC will open for business
tomorrow. Due to smoke and water damage, however, the Campus Book
Store and Sammy’s, which are located in the central part of the
building, will require a longer period of time to reopen.

Anyone who has an event scheduled for the RMC in the near future
should check on the availability of the building by contacting
either the Rice University News Office at 831-4794 or the campus
police at 527-6000.
