Resource on Middle East Terrorism

Edward P. Djerejian, former U.S.
ambassador to Israel and currently director of the James A. Baker
III Institute for Public Policy at Rice University, has extensive
knowledge about Middle East terrorism.

Djerejian is a leading expert on the complex political,
security, economic, religious and ethnic issues of the Middle East
as a result of the diplomatic positions he held in that region for
the U.S. government.

Prior to his appointment by President Clinton as U.S. Ambassador
to Israel in 1993, Djerejian served both President Bush and
President Reagan as Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern
Affairs (1991-93) and as U.S. ambassador to the Syrian Arab Republic
(1988-1991). He was also deputy chief of the U.S. mission to the
Kingdom of Jordan (1981-1984).

In these capacities he played a key role in the Arab-Israel
peace process, the U.S.-led coalition against Saddam Hussein’s
invasion of Kuwait, successful efforts to end the civil war in
Lebanon, the release of U.S. hostages in Lebanon, and the
establishment of collective and bilateral security arrangements in
the Persian Gulf.

To schedule interviews with Djerejian on Middle East terrorism
in the wake of the Oklahoma City bombing, please contact Michael
Cinelli, director of the Rice University News Office, at (713) 831-4794.
