Rice Professor Stokes Available for Commentary on Bosnia
Rice University history professor Gale
Stokes, author of The Walls Came Tumbling Down: The Collapse of
Communisim in Eastern Europe (Oxford University Press, 1993), is
available to comment on events in Bosnia.
Stokes, who speaks Serbo-Croation, spent seven weeks traveling
in Eastern Europe during the spring of 1992 conducting research for
his book which chronicles in meticulous detail events in Eastern
Europe from 1968 to 1992.
Commenting on the Bosnian situation in a magazine article in
1993, Stokes pointed to the Serbs ethnic cleansing campaign of that
time as causing the greatest flight of refugees in Europe since
World War II.
Through such actions, Stokes said in the interview, “the Serbs
have turned themselves into the pariahs of Europe.”
To schedule interviews with Stokes, please contact Michael
Cinelli, director of the Rice University News Office, at (713) 831-4794.
