RICE’S DUBAY TAKES “IRISH MIST” TO BULGARIA
Bulgarians will get a taste of the Irish this fall when the
Evmolpiada Theatre in Plovdiv stages Bren Dubay’s play “Irish Mist.”
Dubay, Rice University’s playwright-in-residence, traveled to
Bulgaria in August and
will return to Plovdiv this month to work with internationally
renown director Peter K. Karapetkov to prepare for an Oct. 21
opening. The play is set in Houston and celebrates friendship, life,
death and the trials and tribulations of being Irish American.
“Mist” is scheduled to run for at least two years not only in
Plovdiv but throughout Eastern Europe and possibly Russia. Dubay
says there is an affinity between the Irish and Bulgarians. During
her recent trip to Plovdiv she was shown early Celtic civilization
archaeological sites, and she visited several Irish-style pubs in
the city. The Evmolpiada has named Dubay as playwright-in-residence.
The theater will serve as one of Dubay’s home bases during the next
two years where she will develop new work.
