HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS USE WRITING TO VOICE FEARS, DREAMS
In a neighborhood where crack and poverty hold sway, public
school students give voice to dreams and fears through the Rice
University Center for Education’s School Writing Project. The
Rice inspired project, under the direction of Marvin Hoffman,
clinical professor of education, began in 1988 with a single
workshop for middle school and high school teachers and has grown to
directly effect 30,000 students this year. The writing project has
even spawned a magazine called East End Stories, which is a
collection of student works about carving out a life in tough
neighborhoods.
