“The Body of Christ in the Late Middle
Ages” is the theme of the first triennial interdisciplinary Neil J.
O’Brien Symposium in Medieval Studies at Rice University.
On Nov. 10
-11, top scholars from Pembroke College in Oxford, England, Ben-
Gurion University of the Negev in Israel, Yale University, Duke
University, Swathmore College, Mount Holyoke College and the

imagery from ritual violence to eucharistic devotion.
The speakers will address how medieval ideas about Christ’s body
affected various modern aspects of Christian spirituality and
attitudes about the human body, violence, suffering, women’s
spirituality and non-Christians, especially Jews.

ensemble, will present “Hildegard von Gilden and Guillaume de
