“Explosion of Chemistry” to Ignite Interest in Science

Grade school, middle school and high school students from the
central Houston area will get a taste of real-life chemistry
Thursday night at Rice University’s “Explosion of Chemistry.” Two
shows will feature chemistry wonders such as “The Glowing Pickle,”
“Fun with Liquid Nitrogen,” “Methane Bubbles” and Tchaikovsky’s
“1812 Overture” performed with hydrogen cannons.

Members of the
American Chemical Society’s Student Affiliates chapter at Rice,
called Owlchemy, will conduct the demonstrations. One of the main
activities of the Owlchemy organization is to perform chemical
demonstrations for area school children to create interest in
science. “Explosion of Chemistry” will take place Nov. 30 at 6 and 8
p.m. in the Chemistry Lecture Hall in Dell Butcher Hall on the Rice
campus.
