EXPLOSIVE EVENT SET FOR NANOSCALE SCIENCE BUILDING

Rice University will break ground today
for a new building to house the Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology. The building is part of a $32 million initiative in
nanoscale science and technology-the science of creating materials
and machines atom by atom.

The ceremony will feature a ground-breaking explosion, set off
by tiny, nanometer-sized objects. Richard Smalley, Rice chemist and
co-discoverer of buckyballs, will deliver the keynote speech.

The ceremony is set for 1 p.m. at the corner of Alumni Drive and
Campanile Road, inside Entrance 13 off Rice Blvd.
