PRESERVATION OF MALI ARTIFACTS TOPIC OF MAY MEETING
The Mali government is expected to ask the United States, through the new U.S. ambassador to that country David Rawson, to
implement a ban on the import of valuable Mali artifacts during a ceremony in that African country in May. Rice University
anthropology professor Rod McIntosh will attend the event on May 14 to discuss his and his wife’s (Susan McIntosh, also a Rice
professor) preservation efforts in Mali for more than two decades.
The McIntosh’s work has been featured in National Geographic, as
well as on a number of television programs. A photographic exhibit
of their work will be unveiled in Mali during the May 14 ceremony.
For more information about the event or to schedule interviews
please contact Rod McIntosh at (713) 527-8101, ext. 3482, or Michael
Cinelli, director of the Rice University News Office, at (713) 831-
