MARTIN OFFERS IN-DEPTH LOOK AT RELIGIOUS RIGHT IN NEW BOOK

On Friday, Sept. 27, 1996, William Martin will be the
featured speaker at a reception to unveil his latest book: “With God on Our
Side: The Rise of the Religious Right in America” (Broadway Books).

The reception, open to the Rice community and news media representatives,
starts at 6 p.m. in the Kyle Morrow Room, Fondren Library on the university
campus. A brief preview of the companion PBS documentary bearing the same title
as Martin’s book will be shown.

The reception is sponsored by the James A. Baker III Institute for Public
Policy at Rice.

Martin, a Rice sociology professor, has forged a one-of-a-kind career. He is
a leading expert on religion in America with a unique perspective: He is a
former ordained minister who received Bachelor of Divinity and Ph.D. degrees
from Harvard University.

He is a nationally renowned journalist who contributes to numerous national
magazines, including Esquire, Harper’s, The Atlantic, and Texas Monthly.

Martin is also the author of the highly acclaimed biography of the Rev. Billy
Graham titled “A Prophet With Honor: The Billy Graham Story” (1991).
