COMPUTATIONAL ENGINEERING BUILDING NAMED FOR DUNCANS
Rice University officials dedicated the new Anne and
Charles Duncan Hall today, providing the campus a state-of-the-art facility for
computational engineering.
Duncan is a 1947 graduate of Rice and former chair of the Rice University
Board of Governors. His career has included positions as president of Coca-Cola
Co. (1971-74) and the second U.S. secretary of energy (1979-81).
In a ribbon-cutting ceremony, a small, computerized robot presented scissors
to the Duncans, who cut the ribbon and officially opened the building where
research in computational engineering will be pushed to new levels.
“The names of Anne and Charles Duncan will instantly identify this building
with the promise for the future that it contains,” said E. William Barnett,
chairman of the Rice University Board of Governors, during the building
dedication ceremonies. “They are identified not only with success, but also with
the constant pursuit of excellence. Charles and Anne Duncan have served this
university with unparalleled distinction. They have worked tirelessly to ensure
that Rice University achieves its tremendous potential.”
Rice President Malcolm Gillis said, “Anne and Charles Duncan together are an
integral part of this university, having devoted a major share of their lives to
the advancement of Rice. The work to be performed within Anne and Charles Duncan
Hall will reflect both the vision and the deep sense of service to society for
which both Duncans are famed. Anne and Charles Duncan have made a huge
difference to Rice University, and the university is hugely grateful to them.”
British architect John Outram designed the building using iconography from
different ancient civilizations. The Anne and Charles Duncan Hall completes the
southeast corner of the engineering quadrangle.
The 113,000-square-foot building will house the departments of computer
science, computational and applied mathematics, statistics, and electrical and
computer engineering.
Personnel will begin moving into the building this month, and it will be
fully occupied by mid-December.
