NSF DIRECTOR LANE TO DISCUSS FEDERAL RESEARCH FUNDING

Neal Lane, director of the National Science Foundation
(NSF), will be at Rice University on Wednesday, Nov. 13, and Thursday, Nov. 14,
to deliver two lectures. He will address the crucial issues facing the federal
funding of university research.

Wednesday’s lecture, “Secrets of Scientific Success,” will begin at 4 p.m. in
the Physics Amphitheater. A reception will immediately follow in the Founder’s
Room of Lovett Hall.

Thursday’s speech, “The Dream of a Common Language: Making the
ScienceNonScience Bridge,” will begin at 4 p.m. in Room 301 of Sewall Hall. Lane
will leave time for questions and discussion.

Lane is a former Rice provost and professor of physics. A two-time recipient
of the George R. Brown Prize for excellence in teaching, Lane has authored or
co-authored more than 90 scientific papers and publications, including a
textbook on quantum physics.

Reflecting on his position of NSF director, Lane said it is “a privilege. It
is a big job and totally consuming of my time and energy. I fully believe in
what NSF does, and I’m doing what I can to ensure that as we get through these
rocky political times, NSF comes out in good shape.”

The Nov. 13 speech is part of the H.E. Rorschach, Jr. Memorial Lecture
series, which addresses issues related to the physical sciences as well as their
relationships to the greater body of knowledge and culture.

The Nov. 14 lecture is part of the Scientia colloquia. Scientia is an
institute for the history of science and culture.
