SECRETARY ALBRIGHT TO DELIVER MAJOR POLICY SPEECH AT
RICE
Secretary of State Madeleine Albright will deliver a
major foreign policy address at Rice University in Houston, Texas, on Friday,
Feb. 7.
Albright’s speech marks her first foreign policy address outside the
Washington, D.C., area since being sworn in on Jan. 23. It will focus on key
foreign policy issues facing the United States in 1997 and beyond.
“We are extremely proud that the secretary of state would choose Rice
University and the Baker Institute as the site of her first major foreign policy
remarks outside of Washington,” said Rice President Malcolm Gillis. “As
demonstrated by her unanimous confirmation vote in the Senate, Secretary
Albright is a diplomatic leader of considerable achievement. Her presence on
campus attests to the growing stature of the Baker Institute and Rice University
in the international community.”
The address is sponsored by the James A. Baker III Institute for Public
Policy at Rice University. Commenting on Albright’s speech, Baker Institute
Director Edward Djerejian said, “We are of course delighted that Secretary
Albright has accepted our invitation. The fact that she has chosen to come to
our forum for her first major foreign policy address outside Washington is a
statement about the Baker Institute, about Rice, about Houston and about the
dynamics of the Southwest of the United States.”
Former Secretary of State James A. Baker, III, will introduce Secretary
Albright. “James Baker firmly advocates that partisanship must stop at the
water’s edge,” Djerejian said. “So it’s only appropriate that our new secretary
of state, another strong believer in bipartisanship, should choose the Baker
Institute to give a major address.”
Secretary Albright will deliver her address at the Grand Hall of the Rice
Memorial Center at 2 p.m. It is open to the Rice community and the general
public on a first come basis. Seating is limited.
