SEMINAR TO BUILD STUDENT SUCCESS IN SCIENCE AND
MATH

Teachers and educators who wish to help their
students succeed in math and science can attend the K-12 Science and Mathematics
Enrichment Seminar Oct. 11.

The seminar, presented by the Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native
Americans in Science (SACNAS) and Rice University, is being offered during the
SACNAS annual conference in Houston Oct. 9-12.

The program features presentations and teacher workshops. Richard Smalley,
1996 Nobel laureate and Rice University professor of chemistry and physics, will
present the keynote speech.

Richard Tapia, Rice professor of computational and applied mathematics, will
give a presentation titled “Awareness and Sensitivity Issues Affecting K-12
Education.” Bernardo Ortiz de Montellano, professor of biochemistry at Wayne
State University, will present “Herbal Medicine of the Aztecs.”

Workshops will offer classroom-ready, hands-on mathematical experiments and
ideas, and science activities that engage students and teach them to be
successful learners in science. A poster session, awards banquet and cultural
pride show are also part of the seminar.

The seminar application deadline is June 16. For more information contact
Linda Neyra, assistant to Tapia, at either (713) 527-4788, or neyra@caam.rice.edu.
