QATAR ENERGY MINISTER TO DISCUSS PERSIAN GULF
DEVELOPMENTS
Qatar’s minister of energy and industry,
Abdullah Bin Hamad Al-Attiyah, will give a lecture concerning his country’s
important energy sector and basic trends in the Persian Gulf region on Saturday,
Sept. 20, 1997.
The program, sponsored by the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy
of Rice University, will start at 5 p.m. It will be held in the International
Conference Facility of The Baker Building on the Rice campus.
Qatar, a small nation located in the Persian Gulf, holds the third largest
proven reserves of natural gas in the world, ahead of the United States. It is a
major supplier of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Japan. The emirate also plays a
significant role in regional politics, with an active foreign policy that
involves not only close diplomatic ties to its neighbors Saudi Arabia and Kuwait
but also ongoing dialogue with Iran, Iraq and Israel.
Doha, Qatar’s capital, has been proposed as the venue for a major Middle East
diplomatic gathering this fall.
The Baker Building can be reached by taking Entrance 13 off of Rice
Boulevard. Once on campus, go through two intersections and then turn into the
parking lot on the right immediately after the second intersection. The Baker
Building faces this parking lot.
