March 19, 1998
Chuggers began practicing last fall and bikers took to the road early this
year to better their teams’ chances of winning Beer Bike, set for Saturday,
March 21.
Beer Bike, which challenges the athletic abilities, chugging speed and team
spirit of Rice students and alumni, has long been an annual tradition at Rice;
students first took to the track in 1957.
The competition is made up of three divisions–alumni, men and women. A 20-person
team from each college as well as the Graduate Student Association (GSA) will
be represented in each division.
Beer Bike will begin with a noon parade, which will start at Cohen House and
end at the the bike track. After a lap around the track, floats will be parked
for the day in the surrounding parking lot.
The competition will begin at 1 p.m. when the alumni division takes center
stage. At approximately 2 p.m., or 20 minutes after the alumni event ends, the
women’s race will begin. The men’s race will round up the event, beginning at
about 3 p.m.
