George Zodrow, professor and chair, Dept. of Economics, published, with Charles
E. McLure, Jr., senior fellow, Hoover Institution, Stanford, U., an article
titled "The Economic Case for Foreign Tax Credits for Cash Flow Taxes"
in National Tax Journal, March 1998, pp. 1-22. He also published a chapter titled
"On the Transition to Indirect or Direct Consumption-Based Taxation"
in "Tax Conversations: Essays in Honour of John G. Head," Richard
Krever (ed.), Kluwer Law International, 1997, pp. 27-59. With John Diamond and
Craig Johnson, Rice economics Ph.D. students, Zodrow published an article titled
"Bequests, Saving and Taxation" in "Proceedings of the 89th Annual
Conference on Taxation," National Tax Association, Washington, D.C., 1997,
pp. 37-45. He also published a chapter titled "Reflections on the Consumption
Tax Option" in "Taxation Towards 2000," John G. Head and Richard
Krever (eds.), Australian Tax Research Foundation, Sydney, 1997, pp. 46-79.
Zodrow, with Charles E. McLure, Jr., wrote a chapter titled "Thirty Years
of Tax Reform in Columbia" in a book titled "Recent Experience with
Tax Reform in Developing Countries," Wayne Thirsk (ed.), World Bank, 1997,
pp. 57-125.

Jane Chance, professor, Dept. of English, is the general editor of a series
of translations titled "The Library of Medieval Women," works of women
writers of the middle ages; all in translation, with introduction and interpretive
essay. The titles included in the series are "The Memoirs of Helene Kottanner,"
"The Writings of Teresa de Cartagena," "Julian of Norwich,"
and "Hrotsvit of Gandersheim." The books are being published by Boydell
& Brewer and should be available by June 1998.

Amy Leuchtmann-Sexton, graduate student, Dept. of Linguistics, gave a presentation
titled "ASL and English: Comparing Spatial Descriptions" at the 72nd
Annual Meeting of the Linguistic Society of America (LSA) in New York, NY, Jan.
11, 1998.

Jeffrey Rasch, graduate student, Dept. of Linguistics, gave a presentation
titled "Vowel Reduction, Vowel Deletion, and Syllable Structure in Yaitepec
Chatino" at the SSILA/Society for the Study of the Indigenous Languages
of the Americas Meeting, New York, NY, Jan. 9, 1998.
