Michael Barlow, assistant professor, Dept. of Linguistics, was invited to the
Centre for Computing in the Humanities, King’s College, London, to give a talk
titled "The Structuring and Analysis of Parallel Texts" on March 5,
1998.
John Bryant, the Henry S. Fox Sr. Professor of Economics and professor of administrative
science, Dept. of Economics, spent March 1-6, 1998, as a visiting scholar in
the Research Department of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta in Atlanta, Ga.
He presented "Liquidity and Recession."
Edie Carlson-Abbey, assistant dean, Janelle Dupont, director of marketing,
and Rhonda Bice, registration coordinator, all in the School of Continuing Studies,
gave a presentation titled "Using Your Database to Track Marketing Activities
or How We Learned to Relax and Love Our Database" at the Sixth Annual Marketing
Seminar of the University Continuing Education Association in Tucson, Ariz.,
Feb. 13, 1998.
James L. Kinsey, D.R. Bullard-Welch Foundation Professor of Science in the
Dept. of Chemistry and dean of Natural Sciences, delivered the Jeremy Musher
Memorial Lecture at the Hebrew University, Jerusalem, on March 11, 1998. The
talk was titled "Breaking of the Chemical Bond: Shedding Light on Dissociation."
Linda McNeil, associate professor, Dept. of Education, will present "Contradictions
of Reform: The Moral and Historical Implications of Pre-Scripted Teaching"
at the 1998 Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association
in San Diego in April. McNeil’s symposium is one of the highlighted sessions
of the meetings and includes Professor Larry Cuban of Stanford and Professor
Maxine Greene of Teachers College as respondents to her paper.
Petronila Tavares, graduate student, Dept. of Linguistics, gave a presentation
titled "Assimilation and Dissimilation in Wayana Consonant Clusters"
at the SSILA/Society for the Study of Indigenous Languages of the Americas Meeting,
New York, N.Y., Jan. 9, 1998.
Elsa Zambosco, lecturer, Dept. of Hispanic & Classical Studies, read a
paper titled "The Ascent of Woman in the Theatre of Elena Portillo"
on Feb. 26, 1998, at the Second Annual Angelo State University Writers Conference.
This year’s conference, sponsored by the English Dept. of AST, focused on the
topic "Chicano and Southwestern Writers" and featured Rudolfo Anaya,
Elmer Kelton and writers and scholars from throughout the U.S.
