Just as during the regular semesters, summer will be busy at Rice, with many
programs being held that benefit the Houston community and Rice students and
faculty.
"There really is a lot that goes on here over the summer," said Bernie
Mathes, associate director of the Center for Education, which sponsors the Creative
Writing Workshop, named the best summer program for children in Houston by the
Houston Press. "Because much of it doesn’t affect Rice students and faculty,
it doesn’t always get on the map. But the summer programs make a big difference
in the Houston community."
Other programs do benefit Rice students, like the Summer School for Middle
and High School Students through which students fulfill a requirement in earning
their state teaching certificates. And, many faculty members are involved in
summer programs as speakers and discussion leaders.
