Jim Blackburn, lecturer, Dept. of Environmental Science and Engineering, was
awarded the Robert C. Eckhardt Lifetime Coastal Achievement Award on March 30,
1998.

Janet Braam, associate professor, Dept. of Biochemistry and Cell Biology, gave
a presentation titled "Functions of the Arabidopsis XET and Calmodulin-Related
TCH Genes" at the VIII National Congress and Second Joint Mexico-U.S. Symposium
on Plant Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in Guanajuato, Mexico, March 15-18,
1998. Braam also gave a seminar titled "Environmental Regulation of Genes
in Plants" for the Rice U. Dept. of Mathematics, April 2, 1998.

Bruce Etnyre, associate professor, Dept. of Human Performance & Health
Sciences, gave a presentation entitled "Lateral Deviation Force During
Rising from Sitting" at the Society for Neuroscience, New Orleans, La.
on Oct. 28, 1997. Etnyre also gave a presentation titled "Impaired Stability
Using Athletic Footwear During Single-Leg Balance" at the American Alliance
for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance on April 6, 1998.

Harmon Gallant, lecturer, Dept. of Human Performance & Health Sciences,
gave a presentation titled "Eminent Domain and Antitrust Law as Remedies
for Sports Franchise Relocation" at the annual meeting of the Society for
the Study of Legal Aspects of Sports and Physical Activity in Tucson, Ariz.,
on March 14, 1998.

Jean-Joseph Goux, the Lawrence Favrot Professor of French Studies, and Philip
Wood, associate professor, both of the Dept. of French Studies, edited a book
titled "Terror and Consensus, Vicissitudes of French Thought," Stanford
University Press, April 1998.

Nicholas Iammarino, professor, Dept. of Human Performance & Health Sciences,
and Richard Smith, professor, Dept. of History, were invited lecturers at Kyushu
U. in Fukuoka, Japan. Iammarino taught an intensive course titled "Comparative
Health and Health Care." Smith’s course was titled "Modern China in
a Comparative Perspective."

Sydney M. Lamb, the Agnes Cullen Arnold Professor of Linguistics and Cognitive
Sciences, gave a presentation titled "A Theory of the Cortical Representation
of Linguistic Information" at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics,
Nijmegen, Netherlands on March 30, 1998. Lamb gave a presentation titled "Neurocognitive
Structures in the Interplay of Language and Thought," the Plenary Address
at the International Symposium on Language and Thought at the University of
Duisburg, Germany, on April 2, 1998.

Honey Meconi, associate professor of musicology and music history, gave a presentation
titled "Text and Context: Absalon Fili mi and the Manuscript London, Royal
8 G.vii" at Indiana U. on Jan. 30, 1998. She also gave a presentation titled
"Aria d’amore" for the English Speaking Union Lecture in connection
with the Houston Early Music Emma Kirkby Concert on March 2, 1998, at the First
Presbyterian Church, Houston. Meconi published translations of two Renaissance
chansons titled "Se cuer d’amant pay joy humilier" and "Voulez
onyr les cris de Paris?" in "The Anthology of Renaissance Music,"
edited by Allan W. Atlas, New York: Norton, 1998. Additionally, Meconi published
an article titled "Is Underlay Necessary?" in "Companion to Medieval
and Renaissance Music," edited by Tess Knighton in a new paperback edition
from Berkeley: U. of California Press, 1997 (sic).

Edward E. Williams, the Henry Gardiner Symonds Professor, Jones Graduate School
of Management, presented a paper titled "Wealth Maximization, Venture Capital
and the Theory of Entrepreneurship" at the Houston Area Chapter of the
American Association at Rice U. on March 10, 1998.

Stephen A. Zeff, the Herbert S. Autrey Professor of Accounting and professor
of managerial studies, Jones Graduate School of Management, gave a plenary address
on "The Coming Confrontation on International Accounting Standards"
at the annual conference of the Irish Accounting and Finance Association, held
April 9 on the Coleraine campus of the U. of Ulster, Northern Ireland. In connection
with the 21st annual congress of the European Accounting Association, Zeff served
on the faculty of the doctoral colloquium held April 2-5 in Antwerp, Belgium.
