Hispanic professional groups will gather at Rice in July to attend a leadership
conference sponsored by the Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Management and
the National Society of Hispanic MBAs.
The half-day conference, titled Houston Hispanic Professionals’ Leadership
Day, will cover topics such as minority demographics in Houston, career advancement
for Hispanic professionals, and Hispanic and gender issues in the workplace.
The event will be held Thursday, July 16, in the Grand Hall of the Rice Memorial
Center.
"Our society needs leaders who reflect its impressive diversity,"
said Gil Whitaker, dean of the Jones School. "This event can be a useful
step in promoting that goal. We at the Jones School desire to have a faculty,
staff and student population [that] represents and respects diversity in its
many dimensions."
Steven Klineberg, Rice professor of sociology, will be the keynote speaker.
He has conducted surveys of Houston’s ethnic communities for the past 10 years
and has studied the nature of contemporary economic and social change. Panel
members and moderators include Miguel Quiñones, Rice associate professor
of psychology; Ellen Ochoa, NASA astronaut; Rueben Casarez, vice president and
senior counsel for Wells Fargo Bank; Minerva Perez, weekend co-anchor for KTRK-TV;
and others.

American Association of Hispanic CPAs, the Association of Mexican-American Engineers
and Scientists, the Hispanic Bar Association, the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce,
