Minutes of Faculty Council Meeting
June, 1 1998 – noon
Present: Isle (speaker), Antoulas, Aranda, Cox, Gibson, Hightower, Patten,
Wilson, Wittenberg, Yunis. Absent: Beckingham, Braam, Caldwell, Driskill, Ghorbel,
Meade.
The agenda consisted of: (1) Athletics, (2) Equity Issues in Spousal Hiring,
(3) New Business.
Isle called the meeting to order and the minutes of the previous meeting were
approved.
(1) Athletics: In light of the reported recent changes in the Western Athletic
Conference, council decided to take another look at how the athletic program
at Rice fits with the academic goals. Isle will get the most recent available
statistics regarding the current year’s athletic admissions and the college
masters’ annual report on this subject. Isle stated that he will meet with President
Gillis on this matter and will report to council on that meeting.
(2) Equity Issues in Spousal Hiring: At the request of council, both Caldwell
and Driskill have drafted recommendations concerning this issue. Driskill is
working on a revision to her draft, and further discussion will take place after
the revised document is received by council.
(3) New Business: The issue of whether or not a dean should be able to prevent
a faculty member’s dossier from being forwarded to the Promotion and Tenure
Committee was raised and discussed. It was moved and seconded that Faculty Council
endorse the long-standing principle that the Promotion and Tenure Committee
receive the entire dossier of any candidate who has undergone a full review
for promotion. The motion was unanimously approved.
Isle asked that everyone let Faculty Council secretary know their availability
to meet within the next two weeks.
The meeting was adjourned at 1:30 p.m.
