Operation Sellout II Under Way
RICE NEWS OFFICE
July 30, 1998
When the Rice Owls open the ’98 football season, there will likely be a very
big crowd on hand. Following the success of last year’s Operation Sellout, which
drew 53,000 fans, Operation Sellout II is under way, with expectations of an
even bigger crowd for the Sept. 5 opener against Southern Methodist University.
The Houston Food Bank is asking each fan to bring seven cans of food to the
game. If fans meet that goal, it will be the largest single collection of food
in Houston’s history.
Houston Mayor Lee Brown will be honored at the game, and a special halftime
presentation will recognize four Owls gridiron legends as Rice’s first-ever
Ring of Distinction honorees: Dicky Maegle (’53-’54), Froggie Williams (’46-’49),
Weldon Humble (’42-’46), and coach Jess Neely (’40-’66).
