Robert O’Dell Elected Into Polish Academy of Sciences

Robert O’Dell, the Andrew Hays Buchanan Professor of Astrophysics, accepted
membership this spring into the Polish Academy of Sciences.

O’Dell was elected a foreign member by the General Assembly of the academy.
He was presented with a diploma and badge at the Embassy of the Republic of
Poland in Washington, D.C.

The Polish Academy of Sciences is a governmental scientific institution devoted
to the development of science and its influence on the culture of Poland.

The academy includes an autonomous self-governing corporation of scientists
consisting of Polish and foreign members. All members are elected for life.
The academy also includes more than 80 scientific institutions and research
institutes devoted to the different scientific activities of the academy.

O’Dell is a guaranteed time observer and general observer on several Hubble
Space Telescope programs. His research focuses on star formation in the Orion
nebula, other star-birthing regions, and the Helix nebula.

He spent the past academic year as a Humboldt Fellow at the Max Planck Institute
for Astronomy in Heidelberg, Germany.
