Kathryn Costello, who built Rice’s University Advancement Division into an
effective development and public affairs team, was named senior vice president
for external affairs at the University of Georgia in Athens effective Oct. 1.
Scott Biddy, currently associate vice president for development, has been named
interim vice president for university advancement while Rice conducts a national
search to fill the post.
"We will always consider Kathryn Costello as a member of the broader Rice
community," said Rice President Malcolm Gillis. "The office of university
advancement at Rice will bear her stamp for years to come. We fully understand
how personal and family considerations were important factors in her decision
to return to the Atlanta area, where three members of her immediate family reside
and where she spent many memorable years."
Costello joined Rice in December 1994 as vice president for university advancement.
During her tenure, she developed and implemented a strategy that resulted in
the completion of three major, successful fund-raising efforts to support initiatives
in computational science, public policy research through Rice’s James A. Baker
III Institute for Public Policy, and ground-breaking developments in nanoscale
science through the Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology.
Most important, Costello shaped the infrastructure and worked with many campus
and off-campus constituencies to develop a strategy for launching the current
comprehensive fund-raising effort to support the university’s strategic plan,
"Rice: The Next Century," the first coordinated effort in Rice’s history.
"Serving as vice president of university advancement at Rice has been
the greatest privilege," Costello said. "I am indebted to Malcolm
Gillis and the board of trustees for allowing me this honor. Rice is one of
the finest universities in the world, destined for an even bigger role in the
next century.
"The friends and colleagues I have made here will never leave my heart
and mind. I leave a wonderful staff well prepared for the challenges ahead.
I look forward to returning to celebrate the great successes that will result
from their efforts," she added.
