Former Rice Stars Head Into Hall of Fame

Trevor Cobb, the 1991 Doak Walker Award winner as the top running back in the
nation, heads the list of 1998 inductees into the Rice Athletic Hall of Fame.
A total of four Owl greats will be inducted on Oct. 16 in the Owl Club in Rice
Stadium. The former Rice athletes will also be honored during the Rice-Tulsa game
on Oct. 17.
Cobb was a two-time All-American and finished his career with a record 4,948 rushing
yards.
Also being inducted is the late Ken Whitlow ’41, an all-Southwest Conference center
on the 7-2 Owls football squad of ’40. That season, Whitlow shared the Houston
Post’s award as the SWC’s most valuable player.
Two track standouts will also enter the hall. Gawain Guy ’86, a four-time NCAA
All-American is Rice’s only sub-four-minute miler, with a 3-minute, 58.21 seconds
time in ’83. He also holds the Rice record in the 1,500-meter run.
Inductee Robyn Bryant ’90 was a four-time All-American on the Owls’ 4 x 400-meter
relay teams. Her 53.63 time in the 400 meters in ’90 is sixth best in school history.
Ben Hollingsworth ’64 will be honored as this year’s Distinguished "R"
Man. Hollingsworth lettered as a defensive back for Rice’s 6-4 squad in ’63 and
has since had a distinguished business career, currently as CEO of Group One Automotive.
Ralph O’Connor will receive the Honorary "R." O’Connor is a former member
of Rice’s Board of Governors and a longtime supporter of Rice’s athletic and academic
programs.
