In addition to the Saturday football game against the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, there will be various other sporting events going on during Homecoming 1998.

Rice men’s basketball and women’s volleyball teams will take to the court Friday and Saturday, respectively, and alumni will participate in various golf, tennis, soccer, rugby and lacrosse competitions throughout the weekend.

Alumni won’t just be playing sports over the weekend, however. Class reunions, luncheons, tailgate gatherings, parties and the bonfire, among many other events, will keep Homecoming participants busy.

Seventeen classes, ranging from 1923 to 1993, will hold special Homecoming class reunions during the weekend.

Homecoming kicks off Friday with a full day of activities. The weekend begins with registration from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Kelley Lounge in the Ley Student Center. Guests can also make plans to attend Friday classes with Rice students, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Guests arriving Friday can view exhibits on display at Rice University Art Gallery and Woodson Research Center in Fondren Library. Both exhibits will be on display throughout the weekend. Everyone is welcome to attend “The ’40s Swing Again,” a casual reception set for 4-7 p.m. Friday at Kelley Lounge of the student center.

The annual bonfire celebration begins at 6 p.m. Friday, with the fire being lit at 7 p.m., at the playing field just inside Entrance No. 12 off of Rice Boulevard. Football players, cheerleaders, the MOB, students, alumni and families will gather to cheer on the Rice Owls.

The Rice men’s basketball team will play Texas-Pan American at 7:35 p.m. Friday in Autry Court. Homecoming participants also are invited to attend a casual Willy’s Pub party, beginning at 8 p.m.

For the theatrically inclined, “Four Baboons Adoring the Sun,” “Best Little Whorehouse in Texas,” “Into the Woods” and Wiess Tabletop Theater presentations will begin at 8 p.m. Friday, and the shows will also be presented again during the weekend. An 8 p.m. Shepherd School of Music recital and Sid Richardson College’s 10 p.m. Oktoberfest round out the evening.

Saturday, Nov. 14, festivities begin with a variety of breakfast gatherings, and alumni men’s and women’s soccer, tennis and rugby games will be held in the morning and early afternoon. The homecoming luncheon will start at noon in the Grand Foyer of Alice Pratt Brown Hall and several alumni tailgate parties will follow.

The Owls will play the University of Nevada-Las Vegas at 2 p.m. in Rice Stadium. Postgame activities will include an NROTC Unit Rice alumni reunion, Lovett College’s celebration of its 30th anniversary, Rice women’s volleyball match against Tulsa at 7:30 p.m., and various other alumni gatherings.
