Renowned Mathematician to Give Lecture Feb. 1

Professor at the College de France and President of the French Academy of Sciences Jacques-Louis Lions will visit the Rice campus Feb. 1-4 and deliver a public lecture Feb. 1.
Lions will present “Winds, Tides and Applied Mathematics” at 4 p.m. in McMurtry Auditorium of the Anne and Charles Duncan Hall. The lecture is free and open to the public. A reception will follow.
Lions is an expert in mathematical methods for analysis and systems control, mathematical modeling and numerical computing, with applications in environmental control and global climatology. Lions is president of the Scientific Advisory Board of Pechiney, in addition to a variety of other advisory posts. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has received numerous international honors and has authored more than 20 books.
During the week, Lions will give additional talks for Rice students: “Trends and Problems in Climatology Modeling” and “Decomposition Methods.”
The lecture series was made possible by funding from the Schlumberger Technology Corp., Ambassade de France aux Etat-Unis, Consulate General de France, the Office of the Dean, George R. Brown School of Engineering of Rice University, and the Computer and Information Technology Institute of Rice University.
