Women’s Conference Set Feb. 5-7

The Rice Women’s Conference will be held Feb. 5-7, focusing on issues of importance to women.
Open to the entire Rice community, the conference will include broad topics of interest to women alumni, students, faculty and staff.
The keynote address, “Women and Health: Just How Different Are We?,” will be presented Saturday, Feb. 6, by Rice alumna Christine Gorman ’82, health columnist for Time magazine.
Also during the weekend-long conference will be lectures by Rice faculty, panel discussions and student-led discussion groups. Student art by or about women will be exhibited throughout the event, and a Saturday night function will celebrate women in the performing arts at Rice with music, dramatic pieces and dance.
Rice faculty speaking at the conference and their topics of discussion are: Helena Michie, professor of English, “What’s Expected When You’re Expecting”; Rahnuma Elora Shehabuddin, lecturer, School of Humanities, “Women and Islam Today”; and Lynne Huffer, professor of French Studies and the Study of Women and Gender, “Feminism in International Perspective.” Carol Quillen, associate professor of history, will lead a Feb. 7 discussion of questions raised by conference participants.
The Women’s Resource Center will host its third anniversary celebration during the conference. Winners of the 1999 Women’s Resource Center IMPACT Awards will be announced at the celebration, scheduled for 3-5 p.m. Feb. 5.
