Rorschach Talk Set for Feb. 25

In a Feb. 25 lecture titled "Whither the Rule
of Law? Making Law ‘Social’ in 20th Century America
and Germany," Peter C. Caldwell and Michael Willrich,
Rice professors of history, will discuss how laws addressing
modern social needs have affected freedoms.
The lecture, part of the Rorschach Lecture Series
in Legal History, will begin at 4 p.m. in Sewall Hall,
Room 301, and a reception will follow at 5:30 p.m.
in Sewall Hall lobby.
Both historians specialize in legal history: Caldwell
focuses on German history and Willrich on American.
Caldwell received a doctorate from Cornell University
and has published the books "From Liberal Democracy
to Fascism: Political and Legal Thought in the Weimar
Republic" and "Popular Sovereignty and the
Crisis of German Constitutional Law."
Willrich, who earned a doctorate from the University
of Chicago, is author of "The Two Percent Solution:
Eugenic Jurisprudence and the Socialization of American
Law, 1900-1930," an article published in Law and
History Review in the spring 1998 edition.
The lecture is open to the public free of charge.
