‘HISPANIC’ RECOGNIZES RICE’S COMMMITMENT TO
DIVERSITY

Hispanic magazine has ranked Rice University
No. 4 in the nation among schools that have demonstrated a commitment to
diversity.

In its March issue, the magazine selected the top 25 colleges
and universities for Hispanics and ranked them according to diversity of student
body, curriculum, student organization, faculty and recruiting and retention
rates.

“We are very pleased by the recognition given Rice by Hispanic magazine,” said Rice
President Malcolm Gillis. “I hope that Rice’s appearance so high on the list of
top schools for Hispanics will encourage more young Hispanic men and women to
consider Rice for undergraduate as well as graduate study.”

Hispanic magazine explained that “In researching the list, we considered only those colleges and universities
with a demonstrated commitment to diversity.” Hispanic is a general-interest magazine in
English, with a national circulation of 250,000.

“Although we applaud the adoption of diversity goals by many
colleges and universities across the country,” the article added, “we find that
actually achieving diversity is still far off for many of our country’s top
schools.”

Among the sources that Hispanic used in compiling the list was
Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education; Top 100: The Colleges Best for Hispanics;
and U.S. News & World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges, 1999.”

Florida International University in Miami was the top choice,
followed by the University of Texas at El Paso and Massachusetts Institute of
Technology. The University of Texas at Austin ranked fifth and Stanford
University 10th.

Rice University is a leading American research
university–small, private, and highly selective–distinguished by its superior
teaching, commitment to undergraduate education, outstanding graduate and
professional programs, residential college system, collaborative and
interdisciplinary culture, and global perspective.
