Kennedy Honored for Role in PITAC
The Computing Research Association (CRA) voted to award Ken Kennedy, the Ann
and John Doerr Professor in Computational Engineering, and Bill Joy, founder
and chief scientist, Sun Microsystems, the CRA Distinguished Service Award for
their leadership of the President’s Information Technology Advisory Committee
(PITAC) and the national effort to raise the profile of information technology.
Kennedy and Joy are co-chairs of PITAC, a 26-member committee made up of leading
university researchers and industry executives charged with advising the government
on issues that impact high-end computing, information technology and networking.
In March the committee issued its report to the president, recommending that
the federal government more than double its spending on computer and information
technology over the next five years to halt a trend threatening the nation’s
progress. A copy of the report is posted online at http://www.hpcc.gov/ac/report/.
