Search for a New Provost to Commence

RICE NEWS
April 15, 1999

Rice President Malcolm Gillis announced the leadership and composition of a
search committee to replace outgoing Provost David Auston, who will become president
of Case Western Reserve University on July 1.

The committee is to be chaired by Gale Stokes, the Mary Gibbs Jones Professor
of History. The 14-person committee is comprised of 10 faculty members, one
Board of Trustees member, one staff member and two students–one graduate and
one undergraduate.

The committee will begin its work right away. It will receive its charge from
the president sometime this month. A short list of candidates is expected by
late October or early November, in the hope that a new provost could take office
not later than June 30, 2000, allowing interim Provost David Minter to return
to his career in teaching and research by that time.

The search committee members are: Professor Gale Stokes, chair, history; Professor
Andrew Barron, chemistry; Assistant Professor Bonnie Bartel, biochemistry and
cell biology; Arnaud Chevallier, graduate student; Charles Henry, vice provost
and librarian; Associate Professor David Ikenberry, Jones Graduate School of
Management; Professor Ken Kennedy, computer science; Professor Randi Martin,
psychology; Associate Professor Andrew Meade, mechanical engineering and materials
science; Associate Professor Honey Meconi, Shepherd School of Music; Constantine
Nicandros, Rice Board of Trustees; Elizabeth Parson, undergraduate student;
Professor Meredith Skura, English; and Professor Richard Tapia, computational
and applied mathematics.
