Exxon Officials Present Matching Gift to Rice

On May 17, representatives from Exxon presented Rice President Malcolm Gillis
a matching-gift check for $625,700. The gift is the 1999 Exxon Educational Foundation’s
3-to-1 match of 300 Exxon employee, retiree, surviving spouse and director gifts
to Rice.

Albert Kidd ’64, business affairs manager of Exxon Upstream Development Co.,
said: "This matching gift from Exxon continues a long-standing relationship
with Rice. The amount of the annual match has increased by more than $30,000
over last year, and our goal is to keep it growing."

Noting that a friendly competition has developed among the many members of
the Exxon community who support colleges and universities by way of the Exxon
Education Foundation’s Matching Gifts Program, Kidd expressed the hope that
all institutions will benefit from such a good-natured rivalry. Rice’s $625,700
ranks as the third largest gift among the program’s 887 grant recipients.

Gillis praised Exxon for its generosity. Noting how rare it is today for foundations
to give matching gifts in multiples–even at a 2-to-1 ratio–Gillis said that
Exxon’s 3-to-1 gift is extremely rare, if not unique, among foundations.

"Whenever it comes time to talk to senior management, wherever they are,
about how valuable this is to higher education, I will be prepared to go anytime,
anywhere to make the case," Gillis said.

Also in attendance for the check presentation were Terry Koonce ’60, president
of Exxon Ventures-CIS; Bob Dalton ’53, retired division manager of Exxon Production
Research Co.; and Al Hirshberg ’82, upstream planning manager of Exxon USA.
