Special Olympic Games at Rice to Start May 28

Beginning on Friday, May 28, more than 3,500 athletes from around the state
will be on campus for Special Olympics Texas.

Rice is the host site for the 1999 summer games, which run through Sunday,
May 30.

Event activity at Rice will center around the Track Stadium, Autry Court, the
tennis courts and various playing fields on campus. Alice Pratt Brown Hall will
be used, in part, by Special Olympics. The activities will start with a torch
run and opening ceremonies on Friday.

The athletes will be staying at Brown, Jones, Lovett and Will Rice colleges.
Meals will be served in the Baker Commons.

The Special Olympics Texas is a privately funded nonprofit organization that
provides year-round training and competition to more than 21,000 children and
adults with mental retardation and closely related developmental disabilities.
Special Olympics focuses on enhancing self-esteem for the athletes, promoting
independence, strengthening families and facilitating social competence, while
encouraging fitness.
