Jane Chance, professor of English, will have published “The Lord of the Rings: Tolkien’s Epic,” in “Lord of the Rings,” ed. Harold Bloom (Philadelphia: Chelsea House Publishers, 1999/2000), reprinted from “Tolkien’s Art: A ‘Mythology for England'” (New York: St. Martin’s Press, 1979) pp. 97-127. Due out this fall, “Assembly of Gods,” an anonymous Middle English poem, edited by Chance, Kalamazoo, Mich.: Medieval Institute Press, Western Michigan U., 1999. 157 pp.

James Disch, associate professor and chair, Dept. of Kinesiology, was recently honored by the National Measurement and Evaluation Council of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD). Disch has been an active member of the council for more than 25 years and has served as council secretary, chair and advisory committee member.

John L. Margrave, the E.D. Butcher Professor of Chemistry, participated in the Aug. 24-25 presentation to representatives of the Department of Defense, the U.S. Congress and various public interest groups of the report of the Committee on Alternative Techniques and Demilitarization of Assembled Chemical Weapons at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C. He led the discussion of “Plasma Arc Technology” for destruction/detoxification of shells, rockets and missiles containing mustard gas, nerve gases, propellants and explosive materials. On Aug. 20, Margrave presented two papers: “Gas-Phase Purification of Single-Wall Nanotubes,” with John L. Zimmerman, graduate student, and Robert Hauge, distinguished faculty fellow; and “Boron-Doping of Fluorinated Carbon Nanotubes” with Hauge, David Castillo, Rice undergraduate student, and Ivana Chiang, graduate student.
