James A. Castañeda, professor of Spanish, Dept. of Hispanic & Classical Studies, delivered a paper, “Un Don Juan gallego,” on Aug. 3 at the 81st annual convention of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese, Denver.
Scott Collis, assistant professor, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering & Materials Science, presented “Large Eddy Simulation of Active Turbulence Control” at the U. of Edinburgh, Scotland; “Differentiating the Dynamic Model: Turbulence Control using LES” at the Hermann-Foettinger-Institut fuer Stroemungsmechanik; “Technische Subgrid-Scale Model for Optimal Control of Wall Bounded Turbulence” at the AFOSR international conference on LES and DNS, Rutgers, N.J., all with Yong Chang, graduate student, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering & Materials Science, in July. Collis also presented “Towards Numerical Simulation of Turbulence Control Using Discrete Actuators and Sensors” (with Chang and Steve Kellogg, graduate student, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering & Materials Science) at the TEX-MEMS Workshop, Texas A&M, on Aug. 23.
Heidi Glantzberg, recently promoted to career programs manager of the Career Services Center, served as a guest panelist for the annual Union Carbide Corporation College Relations Conference on Aug. 19. She discussed recruiting strategies for corporate mergers, developing partnerships with universities, student co-ops and internships, as well as hiring trends for the 1999-2000 season. The three-day forum was held at the Woodlands Conference Center.
George Marcus, professor and chair, Dept. of Anthropology, with Neni Panourgia, organized the international seminar “Interpretation in Anthropology at the Turn of the Century” at the National Research Conference Center of Greece on the island of Syros, July 6-8.
Monika Merz, assistant professor, Dept. of Economics, published the article “Time-Series Evidence on Unemployment Flows: The Sample Period Matters in Journal of Business and Economic Statistics 17:324-334, 1999. Merz also published “Heterogeneous Job-Matches and the Cyclical Behavior of Labor Turnover” in Journal of Monetary Economics 43:91-124, 1999.
Angelo Miele, professor emeritus, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering & Materials Science, and Aldo Frediani, professor, U. of Pisa, jointly directed the 28th workshop of the International School of Mathematics Guido Stampacchia in Erice, Italy, July 11-18. The topic was “Advanced Design Problems in Aerospace Engineering.” At the workshop Miele lectured on “Design of Mars Missions,” co-authored with T. Wang, senior research scientist, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering & Materials Science, and “Design of Moon Missions,” co-authored with S. Mancuso, guidance and navigation engineer, Averstar Corp., Fairmont, W.Va.
Douglas A. Schuler, associate professor of management, Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Management, presented two papers in July at the annual meetings of the Academy of Management in Chicago: “Corporate Strategy for Political Access: A Multivariate Approach” (with Kathy Rehbein) and “Effectiveness in Business-Government Relations: The Role of Corporate Power, Strategies and Tactics” (with Martin Meznar and Kathy Rehbein.)
Duane Windsor, the Lynette S. Autrey Professor of Management, Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Management, presented a paper concerning “The Global Regime for Intellectual Property Rights” at the third international conference on Technology Policy and Innovation held Aug. 30-Sept. 2, at the LBJ School of Public Affairs, UT-Austin, sponsored by the IC2 (Innovation, Creativity, Capital) Institute.
