Don’t Forget: New Year, Numbers, Stationery

In addition to remembering to write the year 2000 on forms and memos, members of the Rice community returning after winter recess will need to program their dialing digits to punch the new 348 telephone prefix.

Stage one of the switch to the new campuswide telephone system is nearly complete. Faculty and staff phones were switched ahead of schedule to the new 348 prefix during the winter recess. Now, anyone off campus trying to reach most campus and staff phones must dial the 348 prefix. The campus area code remains 713. Most faculty and staff phones can be reached by others on campus by simply dialing the regular four-digit number that follows the prefix.

In stage two, residential colleges and the graduate house are to be converted by the start of the fall semester in August.

For more information about the new phone system, visit the Information Technology Web site at <http://riceinfo.rice.edu/Computer/telephone/index.html> or call the help desk at (713) 348-7000.

The new telephone prefix means academic and administrative departments will need to order new stationery. Orders for stationery may be placed with one of two university-approved suppliers—Trostan Printing and Kinko’s.

Trostan Printing can be reached at (713) 348-2375. Kinko’s has two locations where orders can be placed. Kinko’s @ Rice, located in the Ley Student Center, can be reached at (713) 348-6275 and the Rice Village location at (713) 521-9465.

Orders can also be placed online by visiting the Public Affairs Web site at <http://www.ruf.rice.edu/~opa/>.
