Norman F. Carnahan, adjunct associate professor, Dept. of Chemical Engineering, published a chapter (chapter 12), "Asphaltenes Precipitation in Heavy Oil and Tar Sands," in the book titled "Asphaltenes and Asphalts." The book, part of the series on developments in petroleum science, was published by Elsevier Science, B.V., and edited by professors T.F. Yen and G.V. Chilingarian of the U. of Southern California.

Cheryl J. Craig, research scientist, Center for Education, and clinical professor, Dept. of Education, was a featured speaker at the by-invitation-only Narrative and Portfolio Conference held Jan. 14-15 at Harvard U. CraigÕs paper was titled "School Portfolio Making: Developing Teacher Knowledge Through Cultivating Communities of Knowing." Craig,

Cylette Willis, researcher, Rice U., and teachers from five Houston Annenberg Challenge Beacon Schools also were invited to make a second presentation, "School Portfolio Development: Coming to Know Culture and Context Through Reflective Practice." The teachers represented Bethune Academy, Drew Academy and Eisenhower High School in the Aldine Independent School District and Helms Community Learning Center and Lanier Middle School in the Houston Independent School District. Craig has served as planning and evaluation consultant to the five campuses since the Annenberg reform movement began in 1997.

Rafael M. Merida-JimŽnez, assistant professor, Dept. of Hispanic & Classical Studies, presented an invited paper titled "Reevaluación de las escritoras hispánicas medievales" at the Facultat de Filologia, Universitat de Barcelona, Spain, Dec. 15. He also gave a talk titled "Female Authority in Medieval Iberia" at the U. of Cambridge, United Kingdom, Jan.18.

Monika Merz, assistant professor, Dept. of Economics, gave the presentation "The Asset Value of Job-Worker Matches and the Asset Value of the Firm" with Eran Yashiv, Tel Aviv U., at the American Economic Association meetings in Boston, Jan. 9.
