GSA Seeks Input on Student Teaching at Open Forum
The Rice Graduate Student Association (GSA) invites the Rice community to discuss the issue of graduate students as current and future teachers at the university.
"Open Forum on the Future of Graduate Student Teaching at Rice" will be presented at noon on Friday, April 28, in McMurtry Auditorium, Anne and Charles Duncan Hall.
Susan Lurie, associate dean for graduate studies, will discuss the findings and proposals of the campuswide Task Force for Graduate Student Teaching.
The GSA Teaching Committee will present current initiatives on teaching assistant orientation and teacher training with the goal of receiving audience feedback.
Concerns, critiques, suggestions and needs for present plans and future directions are encouraged from the audience.
The forum serves as an opportunity to let the administration and the Graduate Student Association know what Rice graduate students and other concerned individuals think about these issues.
The Task Force for Graduate Student Teaching was initiated by Jordan Konisky, vice provost for research and graduate studies, in spring 1999. It was charged with documenting existing practices and formulating recommendations for the best practices relating to graduate student teaching.
Members of the task force interviewed department coordinators, chairs, directors of graduate study and graduate students in all departments where graduate students perform teaching activities and prepared written reports on individual departments.
The Report on Graduate Student Teaching at Rice summarizes the findings. It can be found on the Web at http://www.ruf.rice.edu/~graduate/Grad/News/tfreport/.
