Unity, Journalists of Color
Inc. is sponsoring a town hall meeting to discuss the treatment of minorities by
the U.S. legal system, such as courtroom sentencing and racial profiling, and to
explore methods to combat stereotyping and discrimination.
Titled “Unequal Justice: The Administration of the
Law,” the town hall meeting will take place on Tuesday, June 20, from 6 to 7:30
p.m. at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University. The event is free and
open to the public.
Panelists include Sonny Skyhawk, writer, film
producer and activist; Rick Dovalina, national president of League of United
Latin American Citizens; Karen Narasaki, executive director of the National
Asian Pacific American Legal Consortium; Roger Clegg, vice president for Center
for Equal Opportunity; Ted Shaw, associate director of counsel of NAACP; and
Alberto Gonzales, state supreme court justice.
The town hall meeting will act as the opening
event of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists’ annual convention
which will be held in the Westin Oak Hotel in the Galleria.
Unity: Journalists of Color Inc. is a strategic
alliance of journalists of color acting as a force for positive change to
advance their presence, growth and leadership in the fast-changing global news
industry. This alliance is comprised of four organizations: Asian American
Journalists Association, the National Association of Black Journalists, the
Native American Journalists Association and the National Association of Hispanic
Journalists.
