People, Papers, Presentations

Scott Collis, assistant professor, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering & Materials Science, lectured on “Large Eddy Simulation and Turbulence Control” at the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AAA) FLUIDS 2000 conference in Denver, June 19-22. The paper was co-authored by Yong Chang (now at Schlumberger, Sugar Land) and Steven Kellogg, both graduate students, and R.D. Prabhu, a postdoctoral researcher, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering & Materials Science. Collis also co-authored a paper with graduate student Alex Dobrinsky, who presented “Adjoint Parabolized Stability Equations for Receptivity Prediction” at the AAA FLUIDS 2000 conference.

Angelo Miele, professor emeritus, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering & Materials Science, lectured on “Free-Return and Minimum-Energy Trajectories in Earth-Moon Space” at the third International Conference on Nonlinear Problems in Aviation and Aerospace, Daytona Beach, Fla., May 10-12. The paper was co-authored by Tony Wang, senior research scientist, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering & Materials Science, and Salvatore Mancuso, guidance, navigation and control engineer, ESA-ESTEC, Nordwjik, Holland. Miele then attended the Global Air and Space 2000 meeting in Washington, D.C., receiving the Honorary Fellow award from the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.

David Queller and Joan Strassmann, professors, Dept. of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, together with their former graduate students Francesca Zacchi and Michael Henshaw, recently published an article, “Unrelated Helpers in a Social Insect,” in Nature (405: 784-787, 2000). Other authors were U. of Florence collaborators Rita Cervo, Stefano Turillazzi and Lorenzo Santorelli. Strassmann and Queller also have each published News and Views features in recent issues of Nature. Strassmann wrote on social cheaters in bacteria (404: 555-556, 2000), and Queller wrote on biological invasions of the Argentine ant (405: 519-520, 2000).
