RICE UNIVERSITY KICKS OFF MAJOR FUNDRAISING
EFFORT
Rice:
The Next Century Campaign is University’s Most Ambitious
Rice University will kick off its most comprehensive fund-raising
effort to date at a party for faculty and staff in Founder’s Court on Saturday,
Sept. 23, beginning with a reception at 6:30 p.m.
Rice: The Next
Century Campaign will raise $500 million to strengthen teaching and research
at Rice. The campaign grew out of a rigorous strategic planning
process—initiated by Rice President Malcolm Gillis in 1995—involving alumni,
volunteers, faculty, administration and students, as well as the Board of
Trustees.
Funds will be used to
enhance undergraduate education and student life, strengthen faculty and
graduate programs and expand outreach programs.
Included in the campaign
are several new and restored buildings, such as the recently renovated Keck
Hall; the Humanities Building, to be dedicated in October; The Jones Graduate
School of Management Building, scheduled to open in the summer of 2002; and
Fondren Library, which is slated for expansion and improvement.
The residential college
system will also benefit, with the rebuilding of Wiess College and creation of
Martel College (Rice’s ninth college).
Other areas of planned
funding include undergraduate financial aid, athletic facilities and
scholarships, interdisciplinary centers, endowed chairs, graduate fellowships,
continuing studies, K-12 education outreach, the James A. Baker III Institute
for Public Policy, and the Center for the Study of
Languages.
