Be ready for election 2000: get registered at the RMC

Be
ready for election 2000: get registered at the RMC

The great thing
about living in a democracy is having the right to vote.
Yet many Americans fail to take advantage of the privilege.

For those who
haven’t registered to vote in the Nov. 7 election,
there is still time, but not much. The deadline locally
is Oct. 10.

To make it easy,
the Student Association is sponsoring a voter-registration
drive for Rice students and employees Sept. 26 from 8 a.m.
to 8 p.m. in the Grand Hall of the Rice Memorial Center.

To register,
a person must be a U.S. citizen, at least 17 years and 10
months old by Oct. 10, be mentally competent and have no
felony convictions. A Texas driver’s license is not
required.

Houston voter-registration
forms also are available at the Ley Student Center information
desk, the Rice Welcome Center, all undergraduate college
offices and all academic departments.

If you live
at Rice, you can vote at Rice. The university has its own
polling place in the RMC. Information on other area polling
locations will be available at <www.co.harris.tx.us/cclerk>.

To vote in your
hometown (outside of Houston), go to <www.ruf.rice.edu/~opa/ur/Reg2vote.html> and download a national register-by-mail form. (Note that
deadlines for absentee voter registration outside Houston
vary by state.)
