Event to mark
start of de-mining effort

The Houston chapter
of the United Nations Association will announce its Adopt-a-Minefield
Initiative Friday, Sept. 22, at Rice’s James A. Baker III
Institute for Public Policy.

Ambassador Donald
Steinberg will lecture about the dangers of minefields at
3 p.m. in the Baker Institute’s International Conference
Facility. Steinberg is a special representative of President
Clinton and the international de-mining efforts. Rice students,
faculty and staff are welcome to attend.

The UNA of Houston
needs to raise $72,622 to deactivate the land mine it is
adopting on a 7.7 acre school site in Visoko, Bosnia. The
Adopt-a-Minefield Initiative is part of a worldwide program
to clear some of the more than 60 million land mines that
kill or maim approximately 26,000 civilians per year.

Rice community
can run for a good cause

The Rice Women’s
Resource Center encourages members of the university community
to participate in the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation’s
Race for the Cure Saturday, Oct. 7.

The center’s
goal is to have 30 participants from Rice show their support
for the cause among the expected 12,000 Houston runners
and walkers. The registration fee for students will be subsidized,
so the cost for students will be only $3. The regular entry
fee is $18. Registration can be turned in at the Women’s
Resource Center, located near Kelley Lounge in the Ley Student
Center.

The 5K run and
walk starts at the Galleria, and the Rice group will caravan
to the starting pint for the Student Center at 7 a.m.
