Michael Barlow, assistant professor,
Dept. of Linguistics, was invited to take part in a panel
discussion on Corpus Linguistics and Language Industry
at the Trans-European Language Resources Infrastructure
conference on How to Extract Meaning from Corpora, held at the U. of Ljubljana, Slovenia, Sept. 21-23.
John Bryant, the Henry S. Fox Sr.
Professor of Economics and professor of management, was
invited to present Trade, Credit and Systemic Instability,
and he was a participant in the symposium Risk Management
in the Global Economy, Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago,
Sept. 21-23. This was a special section of the Three Continents
Conference on The Financial System in the Third Millennium,
sponsored by the Journal of Banking and Finance. His session
chair described Bryant as the godfather of coordination
models and coordination models themselves as the most
promising approach to the Asian crisis and to financial
instability generally.
Jean-Joseph Goux, the Lawrence Favrot
Professor of French and chair, Dept. of French Studies,
announced the publication of his new book, Frivolité
de la valeur, essai sur limaginaire du caitalisme
(Paris: Blusson). A one-hour interview on his book was broadcast
on Radio France (France Culture), and a thorough interview
also is to be published in the October 2000 issue of Art
Press, Paris. Additionally, Gouxs Oedipe philo-sophe (Paris: Aubier, 1990), which has been translated into English
(Stanford U.P., 1993), was recently translated into Spanish
by Editorial Biblos publications (Buenos Aires, Argentina).
Michael Gustin, associate professor,
Dept. of Biochemistry & Cell Biology, presented a talk
as an invited speaker at the Eighth International Symposium
on the Properties of Water held at Zichron Yaakov, Israel,
Sept. 16-21. The title of the presentation was Different
Roles of the HOG Pathway in Stress Responses of Yeast.
Jordan Konisky, vice provost for
research and graduate studies, attended the board of directors
meeting of the National Space Biomedical Research Institute
held Sept. 21 at Baylor College of Medicine. The board reviewed
results of the institutes recent research solicitation
and the planned additions to the research program.
Donald H. Ostdiek, director of the
policy studies program and lecturer, School of Social Sciences,
presented a paper titled Legislative Professionalism
and Member Behavior at the 2000 annual meetings of
the American Political Science Association in Washington,
D.C.
